KNEE REPLACEMENT FAQ

Q. My father has not walked for three years because of advanced knee osteoarthritis. He has been wheel chair bound all this time. Will he walk after knee replacement?

A. We need to examine the patient and assure that his inability to walk is becaus of knee arthritis. We would like to see the knee xrays also which you can mail me too. If the problem of not able to stand up is because of knee arthritis and he is able to do what is called straight leg raising ie able to lift his legs with knee straight and hold it for few seconds, he will walk after knee replacement.

Q. Is it better to get both the knees replaced at one time or its better to do one knee at a time.

A. This is a mutual decision between the surgeon and the patient. Till last year i used to do replace both the knees at the same sitting , gradually i found that the patients are happier when one knee is done at a time followed by second knee at a period of one and half to two months, that way patients are independent and that is a big thing.

Q. How much guarantee can you give for your surgeries.?

A. Nothing in this world is guaranteed but its our human endeavour of dedicated work, analysis of our work and the number of surgeries we do that gives us the words to say that in our hands knee replacement is extremely successful and rewarding.

Q. How do you ensure that there will be no infection.

A. We ensre that we operate in an appropriate set up. The operation theatre must be an isolated one with laminar air flow. Our speed is one of the fastest on the earth. We use all disposable things, all the metal instruments are personally maintained and sterilised by my staff and they are used only in a knee replacement surgery and nothing else. We perform meticulous pulse lavage using a disposable sets. We ensre that we operate in an appropriate set up. The operation theatre must be an isolated one with laminar air flow.
